As part of early detection measures against Ebola, the Borno State Commissioner of health Professor Baba Mallam Gana has directed that all new and returning students presenting at the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) Medical Centre should undergo temperature screening with thermal thermometers.
The Commissioner further noted that the University’s strategic location, close to border communities with Niger, Cameroon and Chad, makes it critical to the state’s disease surveillance network which has been activated to the highest level of awareness against the deadly ebola scourge.
He therefore stressed the need to strengthen preventive protocols to avoid infiltration from surrounding communities and countries surrounding the state even as he charged the management to report any suspected case immediately.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, gave this directive when he left the Borno State High-Powered Committee on Ebola Preparedness and Prevention, who paid an assessment visit to the Unimaid Medical Centre to evaluate its readiness and strengthen preventive measures against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Gana explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening the preparedness of both the state and the University community, following reports of Ebola-related concerns in parts of the country.
He noted that the University of Maiduguri community hosts staff and students from across the federation, making proactive measures imperative.
He further confirmed that there was no case of Ebola in Maiduguri as at the time of the visit, emphasizing that his team was in their clinic purely on preventive postures, aimed at safeguarding staff and students and forestalling any potential outbreak.
Responding, head of the clinic, Prof. Musa Wakil appreciated the Committee for the timely visit and support and assured them of the Medical Centre’s readiness to collaborate with all relevant health authorities to ensure effective prevention and preparedness.
The visit reaffirmed the Borno State Government’s commitment to strengthening disease surveillance, promoting early detection and ensuring coordinated preparedness to protect public Health.
Highlight of the visit, was the donation of three thermal thermometers to the Centre for the tests of any member of the University community that visits the clinic during this critical period.
