CASER COMMENDS NIMASA FOR RESPONDING TO ITS FREEDOM OF INFORMATION (FOI) REQUEST
The Citizens’ Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) welcomes the response of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to its request made pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, 2011.
NIMASA has made available a substantial volume of the information and documents requested by CASER in furtherance of our commitment to promoting transparency, accountability and good governance in public institutions.
CASER considers NIMASA’s response a commendable demonstration of respect for the Freedom of Information Act and an encouraging indication of the Agency’s willingness to engage constructively with civil society in matters of public interest.
We are presently undertaking a thorough review and analysis of the documents supplied. Given the volume and significance of the information received, our assessment will necessarily be careful, objective and comprehensive. Upon the conclusion of this review, CASER shall communicate its observations and, where necessary, make further recommendations or take such steps as may be appropriate in the public interest.
The Freedom of Information Act is a vital instrument for strengthening democratic governance and fostering public confidence in government institutions. CASER therefore encourages all public institutions to emulate NIMASA’s responsiveness by complying promptly and fully with lawful requests for information.
We appreciate the management of NIMASA for its cooperation and reaffirm our commitment to constructive engagement in the promotion of transparency, institutional accountability and the rule of law.
Signed
